👤 {Courtney Walsh Walsh, Courtney aut}

🏢 Guidepost Books 📅 {2012-02-01T06:00:00+00:00 } 🌐 en

A faded scrapbook reveals secrets that reconnect old friends in a place called Sweethaven.

Campbell Carter has come to Sweethaven in search of answers about her mother's history. Just before losing a battle with cancer, Suzanne Carter sent letters to childhood friends from her hometown of Sweethaven, Michigan. Suzanne's three friends -- Lila, Jane, and Meghan -- haven't spoken in years, yet each has pieces of a scrapbook they made together as girls. Suzanne's letters have lured them all back to the idyllic lakeside town, where they meet Campbell and begin to remember what was so special about their long Sweethaven summers. As the scrapbook reveals secrets from the past, old wounds are mended, lives are changed, and friendships are restored -- just as Suzanne intended.

Otherworld 12 - Spell Bound

👤 {Kelley Armstrong Armstrong, Kelley aut}

🏢 Dutton 📅 {2011-07-26T05:00:00+00:00 } 🌐 en

At last, in the novel every Kelley Armstrong fan will need to own, all the major heroines and heroes of Otherworld are united.

It's been ten years since Bitten, the first novel in Kelley Armstrong's New York Times bestselling Otherworld series. In that time hundreds of thousands of fans have ravenously devoured the adventures of Armstrong's witches, demons, and werewolves. Now, in Spell Bound, she brings them all together for her most sweeping tale yet.

Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she's powerless to help herself. At the heartbreaking conclusion of Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would prevent further pain for a young orphan. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise.

And now, witch-hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most of her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell-casting talent, the thing she counts on most. In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Armstrong gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, and other beloved characters, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

Review

“Armstrong keeps the focus on hip, impulsive and likable Savannah, building suspense with plenty of plot reversals and betrayals. Fans of the series won’t want to miss what is clearly the first battle in an Otherworld war.”
*—Publishers Weekly

"Powerfully written... Moves along at a sprightly clip, and Armstrong's senses of humour and suspense are spot on. She knows when to break the tension and when to ramp it up, as evidenced by the climax and dénouement. The reader who gets through that without feeling a bit ragged might want to be checked for a pulse."
The Globe and Mail*

Praise for Waking the Witch:

"Armstrong is quite deft at making Savannah simultaneously formidable, sympathetic and real.... A quick and fun read."
*—The Miami Herald

"Waking the Witch is a satisfying read that stands well on its own....Waking the Witch is a solid blend of fantasy and detective novel that both male and female readers will enjoy."

Otherworld 11 - Waking the Witch

👤 {Kelley Armstrong 未知 aut}

🏢 Plume 📅 {2010-07-27T05:00:00+00:00 } 🌐 en

Columbus is a small town, untouched by the 21st century. But when three young women are found dead – victims of what appear to be ritual murders – things start to get very dark and dangerous... Private investigator Savannah Levine can handle "dark and dangerous". As the daughter of a black witch, she has a lot of power running through her veins. But her arrival in Columbus has not gone unnoticed. Savannah may think she's tracking down a murderer, but could she be the killer's next target? Of course she could always ask her old friend (and half-demon) Adam Vasic for back up. But Savannah has her own reasons for keeping Adam well away from Columbus. And in any case, she can rely on her own powers...

From Publishers Weekly

Armstrong's 11th Otherworld urban fantasy, her first book for Penguin since 2003's Stolen, sends two paranormal investigators to the small town of Columbus, Wash. Savannah Levine, a 21-year-old witch from Portland, Ore., who's itching to pursue her first solo case, teams up with half-demon PI Jesse Aanes to look into three slayings with supernatural overtones. Savannah, who displays an appealing mix of toughness and vulnerability, figures she can blast her way to the truth, but matters get complicated fast when her powers keep deserting her at key moments and more bodies pile up. Armstrong skillfully juggles her twisty plot, weaving in characters from previous novels as she builds to a fast-paced conclusion. This supernatural mystery is unabashedly aimed at fans of Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer, and may well hit the mark.

From Booklist

For the eleventh volume in her Women of the Otherworld series, Armstrong shifts to a new narrator—the 21-year-old daughter of a sorcerer and a witch, Savannah Levine—and takes the urban fantasy conceit into rural Washington. Eager to prove herself as a sleuth, Savannah takes up a case brought to her firm by a freelance PI, a suave, telekinetic half-demon. Three young women have been murdered in a small town north of Portland, and there are signs that an occult ritual might have been involved. The two prime suspects are the town's resident golden child and the leader of a commune (or cult, depending on whom you ask) for young runaways. Armstrong writes with page-turningly lucid prose and outfits her heroine with plenty of pluck, which she'll need to navigate the handful of handsome fellas who drop in for potential romancing. Despite the occult angle and all manner of witches, demons, and other supernatural types (no vampires, thankfully), this is first and foremost a mystery, and a pretty decent one, with the magic mostly coming in the form of cloaking spells and energy bolts employed to bolster Savannah's snooping skills. While this story is mostly self-contained, any number of allusions to the massive backstory and cast of characters will likely have newcomers tracking back to flesh things out. Established fans, of course, will gobble it all right up. --Ian Chipman

Otherworld 10 - Frostbitten

👤 {Kelley Armstrong 未知 aut}

🏢 Bantam 📅 {2009-01-02T06:00:00+00:00 } 🌐 en

For Elena Michaels, being the world’s only female werewolf has its advantages, such as having her pick of the Otherworld’s most desirable males. And she couldn’t have picked a more dangerously sexy and undyingly loyal mate than Clayton Danvers. But now their bond will be put to the ultimate test. A werewolf more wolf than human and more unnatural than supernatural—a creature whose origins spring from ancient legend—is hunting human prey, and Elena and Clayton must track the predator deep into Alaska’s frozen wilderness.

But the personal stakes are even higher. Either Clayton or Elena has been chosen to become the new Pack leader, and every wolf knows that there can be only one Alpha. The couple have always been equals in everything. Now, when their survival depends more than ever on perfect teamwork, will instinct allow one of them to lead and the other to follow?

From Publishers Weekly

The gripping 10th installment of Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series returns to one of her most popular werewolves, Elena Michaels (last seen in 2006's Broken). While chasing a gullible Aussie werewolf to warn him about two rogue werewolves who are trying to frame him for half-eating two Pittsburgh humans, Elena and her mate, fellow Pack enforcer and anthropologist Clayton Clay Danvers, follow his trail to Anchorage. Armstrong conveys the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness while the couple investigate more crime scenes featuring more mutilated human corpses. Elena makes a great Alpha-style leader as she holds her own against male beasts and solves the well-crafted mystery. New readers may be baffled by Pack politics, but fans will find this a solid entry in Armstrong's popular series. (Oct.)
